Cambrian Innovation Granted $100,000 from the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) for Agricultural Wastewater Treatment & Water Reuse

BOSTON, MA – November 10, 2017 – Cambrian Innovation today announced a Phase I project with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to validate a high-solids wastewater treatment and water reuse system, which will address water and energy challenges associated with livestock operations in the dairy industry.

Though there is an increased interest in recycling water from livestock operations to meet irrigation demand, there remains a challenge in doing so without imposing risks on health and the environment. Wastewater from livestock operations includes high levels of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

However, methane can also be a valuable source of energy. The methane potential from animal manure in the United States is estimated at about 257 billion cubic feet, approximately 40 percent of the total estimated energy potential from biogas sources in the U.S. This is enough energy to power more than 1.2 million U.S. homes for one year or to produce the equivalent of 1 billion gallons of gasoline for vehicles.

Cambrian Innovation’s will use the Phase I project with the USDA’s NIFA to validate the potential for a proprietary anaerobic solids and liquid digester to generate energy from the manure content in the waste stream. The ultimate outcome will be a packaged, energy-positive wastewater treatment and water reuse system that aims to enable over 70 percent recycling by utilizing a membrane bioreactor (MBR) for polishing and reuse.

The system will support the U.S. dairy industry’s goal to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2020, and will further reduce the industry’s environmental impact by providing a new, recycled water source that is suitable for irrigation.
