Dr. Todd Guerdat, Cambrian Innovation’s Director of Nutrient Management Systems, attended the Aquaculture Europe 2013 conference this past August in Trondheim, Norway. As a member of the Aquacultural Engineering Society, Todd Guerdat organized and chaired the Land- Based Farming – Technologies session.
The session was open to all aspects pertaining to land-based aquaculture technology. Topics covered membrane biofiltration, internalized waste treatment using constructed treatment wetlands, rotational velocity prediction in tank based aquaculture, as well as comparative analyses between fish reared in flow-through and recirculating systems, to name a few. The result was a very well received, and well attended session. For the majority of the time allotted for the session, standing room only was all that remained for the audience. With two speakers not able to present during the session, a lively discussion ensued discussing effluent treatment prior to discharge. Discussions covered Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture systems, improved nutrient utilization techniques, and even the dichotomy between the priority researchers vs. industry place on required effluent treatment. In total, the session was a great success and provided a unique context to the conference.
