Typical Duties

  • Allocate engineering resources to successfully accomplish company objectives and priorities and identify needs for successful completion of projects
  • Perform administrative and oversight functions in approving proposals, expenditures, and policy enforcement
  • Day-to-day interaction and management of engineering team including: formal performance reviews, informal mentorship and coaching, recognizing outstanding performance, and correcting poor performance
  • Manage recruiting, hiring, and training of new engineering staff and professional development of existing staff
  • Develop and execute product development roadmaps
  • Manage engineering team effectively to project timelines and budgets
  • Provide insight on strategic technical focus to executive team
  • Establish documentation and processes to improve efficiency and reliability of engineering workflow
  • Ownership of the technical content generated by the engineering department in the areas of: product development, engineering for project delivery, commissioning and support of field operations, and applications engineering
  • Approve design documentation including project design basis, specifications, drawings, and calculations
  • Provide technical critical input to effectively solve engineering problems
  • Direct and manage multiple concurrent engineering projects, delegating authority and responsibility to subordinates as appropriate
  • Ensure that products and projects incorporate industry best practices by combing in-house experience with external resource knowhow
  • Identify possible technology partners where needed and develop and maintain relationships with technology partners and engineering vendors
  • Engage with customers on site-specific design and implementation details
  • Work with sales and marketing teams to develop and refine functionality requirements for new and existing products
  • Work with CTO and Director of R&D to establish targets for research in support of engineering activities
  • Support Director of Manufacturing in sourcing and manufacturing efforts by providing technical content and validation, including establishment of qualification criteria, testing criteria, and acceptance standards
  • Support Director of Field Operations through development of manuals and operating procedures and assistance in field troubleshooting
  • Occasional travel to pilot and customer sites to review results, and on-site management of pilot systems
  • Provide clear and concise communication to executive management

The Right Stuff

  • 10+ years of engineering experience
  • 5+ years of experience in product/project development
  • 3+ years of experience managing an engineering team or department
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field required with Masters’ education in a technology or project management program encouraged
  • Demonstrated success in managing multidisciplinary engineering teams to creatively develop products and solve customer problems
  • Ability to lead and inspire a team to excellence, innovation, and creativity
  • Able to work in a cross-functional and geographically dispersed team environment
  • An understand of project management practices
  • Ability to deliver on multiple priorities in a fast paced work environment
  • Must be a strong problem solver with logical and rational methodology
  • An understanding of technical/economic analysis of process and product designs to optimize efficiency, reduce cost, and improve quality and reliability
  • Experience in the water industry, preferably familiar with a variety of wastewater treatment processes and technologies. Experience with anaerobic and aerobic treatment processes a strong plus
  • Experience developing PFDs, P&IDs, mass balances, functional control specifications, hydraulic profiles and piping system design, and equipment and instrumentation selection
  • Understanding of mechanical fabrication and assembly techniques
  • Project delivery experience in the food and beverage industry
  • Project Management experience including writing proposals, management of teams, and management of scope, schedule and budget
  • Experience writing wastewater treatment feasibility studies including evaluations of options and performing cost estimates
  • Experience driving a focused multidisciplinary engineering team toward company goals
  • Proven ability to excel in a fast-paced, small-company environment
  • Stellar written and verbal communication skills. Must exhibit strong leadership ability and have a professional demeanor

  • Local candidates preferred; currently we are not offering relocation

 Working Environment

  • This position will normally work a typical schedule of Monday to Friday. Must be able to work weekends and/or holidays to meet business needs
  • Must adhere to all federal, state, local and company safety procedures and policies including wearing appropriate PPE
  • May have to travel from your primary office to customer sites
  • The work environment is informal, team-oriented, and collaborative
